The three depths of a car scratch

How a scratch is repaired depends almost entirely on how deep it is. Drag your fingernail across it — if it catches, it's deeper than the clear coat.

  • Clear-coat only. The top transparent layer is scuffed but the color underneath is untouched. Often polishable out — no repaint needed.
  • Through the color coat. The scratch shows white-ish or primer-gray at the bottom. The panel needs to be sanded, base-coat color matched and sprayed, then re-cleared.
  • Through primer to metal. Bare or silver metal is visible. Must be refinished — and quickly — or it will rust.

Why DIY kits and quick patches usually look worse

Touch-up bottles and rattle-cans rarely match modern factory finishes. Today's metallic, pearl, and tri-coat paints are built from multiple layers; matching them requires a spectrophotometer reading of your existing paint, the correct OEM-grade base coat, and a clear-coat blended into the surrounding panels. Done wrong, the repair sits visibly off-color in sunlight, fades on a different schedule than the rest of the panel, and lifts at the edges months later.

That's also the trap with quick-patch mobile services: speed comes at the cost of color accuracy and longevity. When the scratch genuinely is a quick buff-out, we'll tell you — but anything past the clear coat deserves a real refinish.

Color matching for metallics and pearls

We pull the manufacturer paint code from your vehicle, scan the actual panel with a spectrophotometer to account for age and sun fade, then mix and spray-out test cards before touching the car. Adjacent panels are blended where needed so the repair disappears under any lighting. This is the standard for the Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Range Rover, Rivian, and Tesla finishes we work on regularly.

Don't ignore deep scratches — rust is real

A scratch through to metal is a corrosion problem waiting to happen. NJ winter salt accelerates it. A small repair now is dramatically cheaper than a rusted-through panel later.

What it costs (honestly)

A buff-out of a clear-coat-only scuff is the cheapest scratch repair we do. A single-panel refinish costs more. Multiple panels, or large keyed scratches that run across body lines, cost more again. We don't quote sight-unseen. See how much car scratch repair costs and the factors that move it.

The 1st Effect difference

  • Spectrophotometer color match — not a guess from a paint chip.
  • Factory-grade refinish materials and a downdraft spray booth.
  • Blended into adjacent panels when the finish calls for it.
  • Lifetime workmanship warranty.
  • Honest read on whether a buff-out is genuinely enough.
