What paintless dent repair (PDR) actually is

PDR is a technique that massages a dent back out from behind the panel using specialized rods and tools — no filler, no sanding, no repaint. When it works, the original factory paint stays intact, which is the best possible outcome for resale value and finish quality.

When PDR is the right call

  • The paint is intact — no cracks, chips, or scratches in the dent.
  • The metal is not stretched, and the dent isn't on a sharp body line.
  • The back of the panel is accessible (some panels have bracing that blocks access).
  • Typical fits: door dings, shallow hail dents, light parking-lot creases, shopping-cart hits.

When conventional repair is needed instead

  • The paint is cracked, chipped, or scratched at the dent.
  • The metal is stretched or torn (common in harder impacts).
  • The dent crosses a body line, or sits on plastic / aluminum panels PDR can't reliably move.
  • Severe hail damage covering multiple panels with paint damage.
  • Damage involving trim, glass, or underlying structural components.

Conventional repair uses metalwork, filler where appropriate, primer, base-coat color match, clear-coat, and panel blending so the repair is invisible — particularly important on metallic and pearl finishes common on the European and luxury marques we work on every day (Porsche, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Range Rover, Rivian, Tesla).

Hail damage

A bad NJ hailstorm can put dozens of dents across the roof, hood, and trunk lid in a few minutes. If the paint is intact, PDR is usually the cheapest and best-looking solution and is almost always covered under your comprehensive insurance with no fault on your record. If hailstones cracked the paint, we'll combine PDR where appropriate with conventional refinishing where it's not.

What it costs (honestly)

A single small ding is the cheapest dent we do. A larger or creased dent that still qualifies for PDR is more. Conventional repair with refinish on a body panel costs more again — and multi-panel hail jobs sit higher still. We don't publish a flat price because no two dents are alike. Why a real shop, not a driveway patch

  • Done once, properly — preserves factory paint when PDR is genuinely the right call.
  • OEM-grade refinishing when conventional repair is needed.
  • Spectrophotometer color match for metallics, pearls, tri-coats.
  • Lifetime workmanship warranty — mobile patchers rarely match this.
  • Honest call on which method fits your vehicle, with nothing oversold.
